On re-reading the last paragraph of my despatch of

the 17th. January by the light of the galling rebuke

to which it has laid me open, I recognise that the

wording is so faulty as to render it liable; to misconstruction.

For the words on the understanding

I should have

written in the hope ', or the whole paragraph might

with advantage have been re-cast. I had no wish to

make a bargain. All I was anxious to do was to make

clear my own position in recommending kr.Wodehouse's

appointment, and to indicate what I am firmly convinced

is to the best interest both of the Police Force and

of the Colony.

It is my earnest hope that you will accept this

explanation and permit me to suggest that the copy I

17th. January may be

enclose of my despatch of the

substituted for the original.

If you allow this to be

done, you may perhaps be able to see your way to send

me another despatch which might be substituted for yours

of the 28th. February.
